Completed CCW class yesterday ;-)

Well the day finally got here and me and the wife took our new little pistols (S&W M&P 9C and Lady S&W .38) and took the CCW class yesterday. Weather was around 50 degrees, and biting wind, but we got through and passed with flying colors.

Now this coming week we need to head to Sheriff's office and get the little wallet permit's and finger prints done. That's the scary part of this ordeal.

The wife did really good with her .38, but she has shot pistols before. Me on the other hand, have never even held a pistol, prior to this purchase couple months ago. I was amazed that my first shot was dead nuts center. The next 39 shots were all in the middle 2" or so diameter from distances of 3 yds out to 9 yds. They made us shot 2 hand, 1 hand, shoulder point, and single opposite hand. Some shots had to be done within seconds, some was at your pace. All in all we had a great day, and it was nice to get out of the cold.

Can't say enough about how impressed I was with how my M&P 9C shot. I now have about 175 rds through her and she has not had a malfunction, and the accuracy is stunning, this coming from an ole fart.

Thanks all to who had input on selection, and those that suggested others, as I might get me a full size 'something' else with a bigger calibe (.40/.45), now that I'm into this.

Congrats!

I, too, am considering CCW in North Cacalacky. And like you, I consider the "inteview with the Sheriff" the most imposing part of the qualification.

I have a question about that, too, maybe they covered it in your course? When the Sheriff asks you "Why do you want to carry a concealed weapon?" - What are acceptable responses? Are there any less-than-obvious incorrect responses?

The reason I ask is that I read on the internet somewhere someone said that "self defense" is not an acceptable reason. I would like to think that the person who typed that into the internet was full of crap, but with laws and beliefs what they are today, I would not be totally surprised.

What is/are acceptable response(s) to that question?

:ok: Gpond, as you know, I live in your state. I had probably the same "interview" you might expect but in a different county, with a different sheriff, but remember that ... SELF DEFENSE is what it's ALL ABOUT, so that writer IS full of CRAP and ...

We live in a "SHALL ISSUE" state, so the sheriff "shall issue" a CC permit to you, provided he has no justifiable reason not to (i.e. past history problems), so I feel you would really have to screw up and say something outrageously stupid (i.e. wanna be Charles Bronson in the old movie "Death Wish") in the brief "interview" to blow it there. The sheriff doesn't have to LIKE us or approve of our 'politics' or 'social status', but he SHALL ISSUE to us though, unless he finds a clear REASON ...

BTW, I told her that someone was knifed by a robber in their front yard about a block away from my residence last month, but she didn't even ask such info as to WHY I want a permit. I was just chatting to her a bit more than I needed to ... unwise but OK.

http://www.kc3.com/CCW_progress.htm

Let's be thankful we live in a SHALL ISSUE state and know that this could change one day ... so I would not delay.

And my one-hour interview was not by the sheriff, just an assistant of some sort, a clerical/notary/administrative type female apparently dedicated to doing this now due to the MANY persons applying for concealed-carry post-elections. She spent as much time talking to me as I did her, and she was mostly asking me to read and sign things, and explaining what to do in a few special circumstances regarding the laws and encounters with lawmen.

My permit took about 45 days to clear due to all the backlogs, and they took a week to call me after my card was typed effective. I got it laminated right away and keep it with my DL always. The CC permit has no picture ID and requires the state DL to authenticate it easily.

I've been carrying every time I leave the house now, usually a Taurus 85ULss, but here of late my CZ 83 in 9mm Makarov. Neither seems too heavy and I NEVER feel undergunned one bit. The snubbie carries (5) Buffalo Bore +P 158gr gas check hollow points and rides in an inside-the-pants Bianchi suede holster. The CZ carries (13) rounds of alternating HPs and FMJs (chamber is loaded since it's an easy double action) in a Bianchi 'Minimalist' high-rise style cowhide holster -- And the heavier all-steel CZ auto is actually much more comfortable in the long-haul than the 'weightless .38', due only to the 'Minimalist' holster-style alone, and fast becoming my favorite, only if I wear a jacket or coat since a shirt tail wont quite hide it's print completely all of the time. (I have a 33" waist) Holster design is becoming quite IMPORTANT to me now.
http://media.midwayusa.com/productIm...ail/481858.jpg The Bianchi 'Minimalist' holster I prefer now, worn cross-draw

When summer comes I'll go to the tiny palm-size Beretta model 21 in .22LR shooting (7) 40gr CCI Velocitors, from a pant's pocket holster. Up to now I've never even carried a back-up speedloader or magazine, keeping one in the car each day, just in case I feel trouble though. I feel that I've got plenty gun ...

After about 2-weeks, it STILL seems such an oddity to spend a whole day shopping at Home Depot, Office Max, grocery stores, eating in a restaurant, driving around town in the car -- and I'm packing HEAT only about 1-second away ... it feels REAL good ... a gently warm gun, only time I take it off is at the Post Office ... easy for ME to stay COOL now! ... Only I know my little secrets, you see?
:565: So, Gpond and others, get your permit and claim your right to bear an ARM :coolbeer:

Gpond: We haven't gone with our certificates to the sheriff yet, but I intend to let them know we are both requesting permits because of SELF DEFENSE. I would be taken aback if they said that was wrong.....

koyaanisqatsi: You say you carry in Restaurants? I assume they do not sell alcohol? May sound anal, but we were told you weren't allowed to carry in restaurants that served alcohol.....That one just doesn't seem right, but that's what I remember. Just inquiring.

Thanks,
RK

RoadKing you're right about that ... but the restaurants were a Bojangles, a Wendy's and an all-you-can eat Chinese buffet for $8.88 ... that's when I decided the inside-the-pants holstered .38 was TOO DAMN BIG to fit under my belt, even on the last belt loop. And I guess technically these are not "restaurants" as many would think of.

But if I am to go inside a restaurant serving alcohol I was well trained to take the gun out of the holster and lock it in the car. Same with movie theaters because they are "places of assembly and charging admission". But I last went to a movie in about 2006, maybe 2005? Oh well, I don't drink much either, ever since that scene with Ingrid Bergman in Casablanca ... and I won't play it again... but I may have to shoot a NAZI Colonel again one day, can't really say.

It depends entirely on these factors:

1) which state you're in;
2) the mindset of your local area;
3) the mindset of the relevant law enforcement agency (and officer/deputy).

"Personal protection" (without further ado) gets one a CCW in these parts. That's because we have a Sheriff who believes having an informal posse comitatus benefits him and everyone. I'd hope North Carolina would be more lenient than these parts.

Re: Completed CCW class yesterday ;-)

I took the class a week or so ago. Here we can file by mail or drop it off at an office in Albuquerque. Then it takes several weeks while they do checks. This state is very loose on gun law in most cases, but I'm disappointed that they require all this to carry concealed. I have 90 days from class to file.

They require fingerprinting. Is that common in most states? Not that I care much, I've been in the military as well as the VA medical system and I file taxes. So they have my DNA, SSAN, mailing address, fingerprints and pictures of me at various stages of my life.

Bottom line is they know who I am, where I am and countless other things about me. The other bottom line is, they don't scare me.

I only have one registered gun... that one I bought in Ohio where you have to register them, but I think I sold it or gave it away or something. Anyway I qualified with 45 semi and 45 revolver so I would be able to carry that or anything smaller. They have no idea "what" you will be carrying, it's not issued for a particular gun or caliber. Only allowed one concealed is the rule.

I don't know, I'll probably file. The other choice is to chance it without, but one time and I'm probably screwed that way. We are allowed to carry open or concealed in a vehicle without a permit. Vehicle is considered on your property here, until you get out. Then you can't carry concealed without permit.

The difference between us in New Mexico and they in Texas is that Texas has a list of places you can carry and NM has a shortlist of places you can't. Or so I am told on the Texas deal.

We can't carry into a place that serves alcoholic beverage, like a bar. Or on public school property, courthouse. Otherwise it needs to be posted prominently or it is ok.

Used to be that you could not carry concealed anyplace that "sells" alcohol but that was recently changed to "serves" alcohol. Currently there is a bill before the legislature to allow it in restaurants that serve liquor but not bars that make their living predominantly makes a living serving alcohol.

Thinking about it. I carry one in the truck all the time as it is, and sometimes open.

I would suggest getting your CCW now. If this country goes down the shitter you will want to be able to carry legally while standing in line for groceries. On the other hand it may make you a target for corrupt government officials in the later stages. At that point who cares you will have probably done a lot worse. If you hold yourself to the values of our Constitution you will not feel bad about your decisions.
